The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had decided to expand the Vijayawada-Hyderabad National Highway into six lane. Initially it was planned to expand this highway from Dandu Malkapur near Hyderabad to Anumanchipalli near Jaggaiahpet. A detailed project report (DPR) was also prepared for the same covering 181.5 kilometers.

However, sources say that the NHAI had decided to extend the six-lane road upto Gollapudi on the outskirts of the city. This would tale the length of the road to 121.5 kilometers. The NHAI had invited tenders for this and the last date to file the tenders is September 24, 2024.

The NHAI had identified 17 block spots on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada national highway, where accidents occur frequently. The NHAI had conducted a study on the high way and found these 17 block spots are dangerous and cause accidents. The NHAI initially planned to widen the road at these 17 block spots. However, it had decided to expand the road from Dandu Malkapur.

The NHAI had decided to invite tenders for the detailed project report (DPR) for the new lane. The officials are now busy receiving the tenders for the DPRs. Once the DPR is ready, then the NHAI would invite tenders for laying of the six lane road. These works would also be taken up at the Nandigama by-pass, which were once stopped by the NHAI.
