Former Chief Whip Gadikota Srikanth Reddy has strongly criticized the TDP-led coalition government for discontinuing the free crop insurance scheme introduced by the previous YS Jagan administration. He stated that this program was essential for supporting farmers, as it covered crop losses without requiring premium payments from them, easing their financial burdens during tough times.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Srikanth Reddy highlighted that the new insurance scheme introduced by the TDP government now mandates farmers to pay premiums, adding additional expenses for them. He noted that this shift comes at a time when farmers are already struggling with rising input costs. According to Reddy, the free crop insurance had been a “lifeline” for farmers, offering them security during natural disasters like droughts and heavy rains. The scheme, he emphasized, was nationally recognized for its effectiveness and awarded for innovation.

He further criticized the TDP government for breaking promises made to farmers, particularly the commitment to provide annual financial support. He also condemned the decision to dissolve agricultural advisory councils, which played a critical role in guiding and assisting farmers. He argued that these moves demonstrate a lack of commitment to the welfare of the state’s farmers

He urged the government to restore the free crop insurance scheme. He insisted that, rather than imposing financial burdens on farmers, the government should prioritize their needs and provide meaningful support to ensure they remain financially stable and protected against unpredictable crop losses.
