The Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA) is a complex congenital heart condition in newborns where the main arteries from the heart, the aorta and the pulmonary artery, are positioned incorrectly. This causes poor blood circulation, as oxygenated blood doesn’t reach the body properly. Without surgery within three to four weeks of birth, infants with this condition face severe health risks. Operating on newborns with TGA is highly challenging.
Two infants from Ganjam district, Odisha – Baby of Mamata Nayak and Baby of Pooja Raval – were taken to the Ramesh Hospitals Outreach Center, where Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Vasudev conducted heart scans. The tests confirmed TGA, with abnormal positioning of the arteries, leading to oxygen saturation levels as low as 55-65%, compared to the normal 95-100%. In such cases, a procedure called the “Late Arterial Switch Operation” is performed. The success rate for such late-stage operations is typically low. Dr. Vasudev referred the case to Dr. Chigurupati Bharat Siddharth, a leading pediatric and adult heart surgeon, who performed the intricate operation with his team, resulting in successful outcomes for both infants.
Dr. Potineni Ramesh Babu, Managing Director of Aster Ramesh Hospitals, praised the teamwork of experienced specialists in pediatric cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, anesthesiology, nursing, and support staff. He noted the hospital’s history of successful heart surgeries for children from various countries, including Nigeria, Cambodia, Turkey, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, and celebrated the successful recovery of these two infants from Odisha.
Aster Ramesh Hospitals Chief Operating Officer Dr. Nadella Giribabu, pediatric heart specialists Dr. Vasudev, Dr. Jyoti Prakash, Dr. Kattula Anusha, cardiac surgeon Dr. Chigurupati Bharat Siddharth, and anesthesiologist Dr. Pavan, were present.
