The ‘Journal of the Indian Medical Association’ (JIMA), a professional publication of India’s largest association of doctors, has bestowed a special honor on Dr. Yanamadala Muralikrishna, a Telugu physician who has been making significant contributions to the field of AIDS for the past 27 years.
Dr. Muralikrishna has been working in AIDS and public health since 1997. His first and only scientific research abstract from the Telugu states, focusing on tuberculosis in HIV disease, was presented at the 13th International AIDS Conference in 2000. This research was recognised as one of the 25 outstanding studies among worldwide research presentations.
While a three-drug combination has been the global standard for AIDS treatment since 1996, Dr. Muralikrishna presented his research abstract on a two-drug combination therapy at an international conference in 2004. By late 2022, this two-drug treatment approach was incorporated as an option into both U.S. and European treatment guidelines.
To raise public awareness about AIDS, Dr. Muralikrishna has authored numerous articles in popular magazines. He published his first book on AIDS in Telugu in 2000. During the Covid crisis, he regularly provided awareness and guidance to people in the Telugu states. His book ‘Covid AIDS and Me’, published in January 2022, gained widespread recognition. In March 2024, he published another book titled ‘HIV AIDS’ in Telugu.
His most recent work, ‘HIV AIDS in India and Developing Countries’, published in May 2024, was featured in the November 2024 issue of the Journal of the Indian Medical Association. Dr. Muralikrishna’s comprehensive book on AIDS, drawing from his extensive research and profound clinical experience, offers valuable insights into this contemporary global health challenge. This essential resource serves multiple audiences, from medical professionals and health policymakers to the general public.
The book’s unique perspective, focusing on the challenges and solutions specific to developing countries, fills a crucial gap in HIV/AIDS literature. His analysis of this complex issue makes it an invaluable reference for AIDS experts worldwide, particularly those working in resource-limited settings.
