The Andhra Pradesh state government is working on a strategy to end the flood threat to Vijayawada and Amaravati. Based on the recent flood threat to the two cities, the government had started working on permanent solution to end the flood threat.

The state government wants a retaining wall along river Krishna on Amaravati. This would start from historical Amaravati town and end at Prakasam barrage. This would go along with the Karakatta built some fifty years ago. There is a possibility of the bund breaching in the future and inundating entire Amaravati. Hence the government wants to build a concrete retaining wall along the river and protect Amaravati area.

The government plans to expand the Karakatta into a four-lane road. This would also protect Amaravati from the floods in future. Besides, the Amaravati town would have better and quality water management system from the beginning. The drainage and rain water systems would be in place in Amaravati for the future use.

The state government also wants to build a new barrage at Vykuntapuram in the upstream of Prakasam Barrage. This would have the storage capacity of 10 tmcft. This would save Prakasam Barrage from the flood threat. The state government also plans to have two more Barrages in the downstream of Prakasam Barrage. One would come up at Chodavaram with a storage capacity of 1.7 tmcft and another at Bandikollanka with a storage capacity of 4.7 timcft. These two barrages would save the lowlying areas in the downstream of floods in future.

The state government is planning to clear all encroachments along Budameru rivulet. The government plans to strengthen the bunds on both sides to prevent flooding of the city in future. The government plans to build concrete retaining wall on both sides of the Budameru.

Besides all these, the government wants to merge at least 15 village panchayats in Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and make it Greater Vijayawada Municipal Corporation. This would help the state government and the civic body to focus on its drainage system and clear the rain water within no time.
