State Govt asks Centre for Rs 6,880 cr for flood relief

The state government had sent a report to the Central government seeking Rs 6,880 crore for the flood relief works in the state. The government had sent the initial report on the damages caused to the roads, electricity, water supply and other departments.

The heavy rains that have lashed out on the state on August 31 and September 1 have caused heavy loss to the state. Flood water have entered into the houses inundating them and rendering people homeless for seven days. The floods have impacted the lives of over 10.64 lakh people. The floods also took the lives of 31 persons, including 25 in the NTR district.

The state government emphasized the need to strengthen the Budameru bunds. It plans to further widen and strengthen the bunds. The government also highlighted the need to build another barrage  in the upstream of Prakaam Barrage.

The government felt the need to widen the Budameru Diversion Canal to take more water. This is to be done on a war footing, the government felt. The government said that this was the highest flood ever in the history of Prakasam Barrage.

There were floods to Krishna river from August 29 to September 4 and have inundated several villages including 32 wards in Vijayawada city. Thousands of animals were killed in the floods, the state government said. Agriculture and horticulture crops were also damaged, the government said. It further said that Rs 341.3 crore are to be distributed to the farmers as input subsidy.

The loss to the revenue department was put at Rs 175 crore, while agriculture department was put at Rs 301 crore and electricity department at Rs 481 crore. The loss to the Roads and Buildings department was put at Rs 2,164.5 crore while the irrigation department was put at Rs 1568.56 crore. Panchayat Raj department had lost Rs 167.55 crore, the state government said in its report.
