Dr Subramaniya Swamy has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court of Andhra Pradesh, raising concerns over the alleged use of substandard ingredients, including the presence of animal fat, in the preparation of the sacred laddus at Tirupati Tirumala, the holy abode of Lord Venkateswara.

In the petition, Dr. Swamy has requested the Hon’ble Supreme Court to issue a Writ of Mandamus or other appropriate directions to appoint a committee, which would be monitored by the court, to thoroughly investigate these allegations. He emphasized that the issue concerns public health and the sanctity of the religious offerings made to Lord Venkateswara.

The petitioner has also sought the Court’s intervention under Article 142 of the Constitution of India, to ensure that justice is served in this matter, while upholding the public interest. Additionally, the petition prays for any other orders the Court deems fit in light of the situation.

Dr. Swamy has requested the Court to issue an interim direction to obtain a detailed forensic report from the concerned authorities, focusing on the lab testing of the ghee used in the preparation of the laddus, including its source and quality.

This PIL comes in the wake of growing concerns over the ingredients used in the iconic laddus, which are revered by millions of devotees across the country. The petitioner has highlighted the need for transparency and accountability to protect both the spiritual and health interests of the public.

Meanwhile, YSR Congress MP and former TTD chairman, YV Subba Reddy filed a PIL in the Supreme Court, seeking a court-monitored investigation into allegations of substandard ghee being used at the Tirupati Tirumala Temple. He requested the formation of an independent committee, led by a retired Supreme Court judge or experts, to investigate the issue. The petition also called for an interim relief in the form of a detailed forensic report on the source and quality of the ghee and a temporary gag order on publicizing the issue to protect devotees’ sentiments. These measures aim to ensure transparency and address public concerns fairly.
